What is GSM1800?GSM1800, previously known as PCN, has all the features of GSM900. To a sharp observer, however, GSM1800 looks like an "extra" band to increase cell capacity in crowded GSM900 regions.
GSM900 plans are usually more expensive than their GSM1800 counterparts. This stems from the fact that GSM1800 plans have no peak hours, and are prices at off-peak rates.
GSM1800 is slanted towards "local" calling purposes. This means that if someone intends to use the handphone mostly for local calls within Malaysia, then GSM1800 is an excellent choice. GSM1800 might not be available in all countries with GSM network, hence limiting the use of GSM1800 as an international roaming network.
Users should not worry about which to choose: GSM1800 or GSM900, as this is usually determined by the capabilities of the phone. Given the choice, however, users have been known to opt for GSM900 simply because it is the preferred network where international roaming is concerned.
Compatible GSM1800 handphones
There are currently no popular phones that are solely GSM1800-capable. Most phones would be dual band.
