What is GSM?(formally Groupe Spéciale Mobile) now stands for Global System for Mobile communications. Unrivaled in its popularity around the world, it is believed to be the most popular network standard. It comes in three flavors: namely GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900.
The number after the word GSM actually stands for the frequency at which the network operates on. In other words, GSM900 means that the GSM network is operating at 900MHz, while GSM1800 is GSM at 1800MHz.
In Malaysia, we commonly refer to GSM900 as just GSM.
