Everyone's trying to keep up with information overload, and one way to try to conquer the flood is to be on the phone at all times. Unfortunately, this creates impossible expectations for heavy cell phone users. Soon bosses, friends, and tenacious telemarketers expect you to always be on the phone. In an attempt to get some time away, you sneak off for the weekend, but you just can't leave the cell phone behind. The end result? The wireless phone becomes a chain keeping its user at heel forever. How do you escape? You can't just turn it off, can you?
The Cure
Staying in touch is great, and some jobs require it, but there is such a thing as taking it to an extreme. While the convenience of a cell phone can save time, excessive use can work against you and leave you unable to enjoy the present moment. Most cell phone service plans include voicemail--learn to use it. If you're not expecting an urgent call, consider turning your phone off in restaurants, at the movies, while driving, or in another person's company. Nothing is more boring than hearing one end of a cellular conversation while you're staring listlessly at your linguine. If your phone service plan includes caller identification, some phones will let you set special rings for callers you really want to hear from.
Consider using an answering service that will route your calls appropriately. Basically, don't let your appetite for constant communication get out of control. Those around you will appreciate it, and you'll avoid lots of distracting interruptions throughout the day.
