Sony Xperia M2 vs Sony Xperia M – Improvements In Every Inch

The Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet were not the only Sony products to be announced during MWC 2014 in late February. The Japanese electronics company also unveiled the Xperia M2, which is the mid-range follow-up to last year’s Xperia M as part of their new line-up of devices for the new year.

So what has improved in the rather short space of time between the debuts of the Xperia M2 and Xperia M? (The Xperia M was first announced in June 2013 and subsequently released to the market two months later)

Just about every inch of the new phone is an upgrade it seems. The most obvious is of course the display itself. Not only has it gone bigger (4.8-inch vs 4.0-inch), but the screen resolution has also been bumped up from 480 x 854 pixels to 540 x 960 pixels. The Xperia M2 is also 0.7mm thinner, making it the sleeker device between the two. Nevertheless, as far as design goes, the Xperia M2 maintains the same “Omnibalance” design synonymous with Xperia phones.

The Xperia M2 is powered by more advanced hardware, naturally. There’s the quad-core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor versus the dual-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus found in its predecessor. However, the amount of RAM found in both devices remains the same at 1GB) Twice as more internal storage memory was offered (8GB vs 4GB) though both are expandable via microSD. Last but not least in the hardware department, the Xperia M2 should have a better battery life thanks to its larger 2,300 mAh battery.

As for the software, the Xperia M2 will be shipped with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with an upgrade to 4.4 KitKat already planned in the future. Meanwhile, the Xperia M runs on the older Android 4.1 out-of-the-box but has started to receive the 4.3 update only just recently.

How about the camera? It too has been upgraded from the measly 5MP shooter of the Xperia M to a much more respectable 8MP in the Xperia M2.

The Xperia M was released for RM750 and it’ll be interesting to see the local price of the Xperia M2. We might even know the Xperia M2 price already (RM999) after it was inadvertently revealed earlier.

Currently no local release date was announced for the Xperia M2 but it is expected to arrive sometime later this month.

(Both Xperia M2 and Xperia M also come in a dual-SIM variant)
