vivo Dominated 2018, But 2019 Might Be Even Better

2018 will go down as one of the most defining years in vivo’s history. So much have happened. If we take a look back at the year in whole, it was the year vivo truly breaks into the international stage with aplomb. It all started when vivo showcased their APEX concept phone which introduced groundbreaking technologies such as in-display fingerprint reader and truly bezel-less, notch-less display via an “elevating” popup selfie camera – features that would go on and be an increasing staple in what an immediate future of smartphone will be like.

The APEX concept phone would also go on to spawn the likes of the vivo NEX and vivo X20 Plus in just a few short months after – mass-produced devices that immediately put these tech onto consumers’ hands. The innovation did not stop there as vivo went further and surprised everyone by releasing the vivo NEX Dual Display in the tail-end of the year, further pushing the envelope. Besides featuring a unique two-display system on either side of the device, it is also one of the most powerful Android smartphones in the market yet, packing as much as 10GB of RAM.

Let’s not forget their foray into the global stage by appearing as one of the major sponsors for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, the greatest and most-watched sporting event on earth. People from some far-flung countries would have heard of vivo because of that and it speaks of vivo’s huge ambition to expand beyond their home country China. Before that, they have also announced their future AI strategy as well as their 5G smartphones plan at “The Future of Communication” sub-forum of BoAo Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018.

Closer to home, vivo was also a hive of activities. A flurry of smartphones were released in Malaysia that includes the aforementioned vivo NEX, vivo X21 and vivo V11 which feature in-display fingerprint scanner. Meanwhile the likes of vivo V9 and V11i which are selfie-centric phones also made their debuts, gaining much popularity among the selfie-obsessed people here. There were also some very affordable phones catered to budget seekers like the vivo Y71i, Y81 and Y91i.

Beyond smartphones releases, vivo has also made their presence very much felt in the local scene  throughout the year by collaborating with various parties to headline a number of shows and events, most notably Astro’s popular Big Stage singing competition. We would also see vivo hosting their very own PUBG Mobile Malaysia National Championship (PMNC) 2018 in collaboration with Tencent which saw teams from all over the country battling for supremacy in one of the most popular video games today.

2018 is a tough act to follow no doubt, but vivo is not showing any signs that they are about to slow down this year. If anything, the progress train is actually picking up more speed. In the second month of the new year alone, there have already been lots of new developments. The APEX phone is making a comeback with an even wilder concept of a button-less as well as port-less phone this time around. In Malaysia, they are about to unleash the new V15 and V15 Pro, bringing the vivo NEX’s impressive tech and features to even more people with a more affordable price tag.

In between, they also unveiled a new visual brand identity which includes a new company logo. And then there’s iQOO, a sub-brand by vivo which is still shrouded in mystery but looks to be cooking up some pretty exciting stuffs – like foldable smartphone exciting.

If 2018 was a roller-coaster ride for vivo – with the ascend full of anticipation followed by the rush of excitement when the carts come zooming down – 2019 is set to be an even wilder one with 360 loops thrown in.

So strap in, sit back, and let vivo takes us on a ride not-to-be-missed.
