Touchscreen keyboard patent filed by Apple

A patent is being filed by Apple for touchscreen keyboards that allow them to mimic their traditional counterparts. The application process for the patent is still underway, so no official patent as of yet.

Cupertino describes the use of a mix of haptic motors and electrostatic charges to provide feedback during typing. This in turn allows each key on the keyboard to emit its own charge, and it gets stronger towards the edge of the feedback mechanism. For the mechanical feeling, the patent explains that the fingers conduct charges of each key. What this means is that the keys attract and repel the fingers as you type. Sensations such as texture and friction will be introduced as well, and this allows users to touch-type.

In any case, as with any patents out there, even if it was filed and approved, we may not necessarily see it implemented in any product.
