The New Samsung Galaxy A80 Has No Traditional Front Camera Because It Doesn’t Need One

The whole getting-around-the-notch debacle has lead to many smartphone makers doing weird things to their devices. The latest exhibit comes from none other than Samsung themselves. Late to the notch party compared to everyone else, the Korean giants have nonetheless settled comfortably with a hole-punch cutout design as seen in their latest Galaxy S10 flagship series. Or so we thought.

They have just unveiled the Galaxy A80, their latest midrange phone in the onslaught of midrange phones in the last few weeks alone which saw the likes of the Galaxy A30, Galaxy A50 and Galaxy M20 being released to market. This is in addition to last November’s grand Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 launch. An interesting albeit curious strategy that will be a topic for another date, but let’s take a look at what the Galaxy A80 has to offer.

The most striking thing about the A80 is undoubtedly its camera –  a strange, hybrid coming-together off several camera innovations over the years. It has triple cameras yes, just like its higher-end flagship siblings, but they also pops up and retracts from its body upon demand. Far from the weirdest thing we have seen yet. But the icing on the cake is that the cameras also flips to the front for selfie mode. Oppo N1/N3 throwback vibes, anyone?

So there you have it – a bizarre rotating motorised pop-up triple camera setup. Let that sink in for a bit.

It also means that the A80 doesn’t has any traditional front camera as the triple cameras do double-duty jobs. They are made up of a 48MP main lens, an ultra-wide angle lens and a 3D Depth camera. The rest of the specs do not sound as exciting, but they will raise a few eyebrows for approaching flagship territory.

  • 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED “New Infinity” Display (2400 x 1080 pixels)
  • 8GB RAM
  • Octa-core Snapdragon 730 processor
  • 128GB internal storage (non-expandable memory)
  • On-Screen Fingerprint
  • Dolby Atmos
  • Android 9.0 Pie
  • 48MP main + 8MP ultra-wide lens + 3D Depth triple (rear and front) cameras
  • 3,700mAh battery (with 25W Super Fast Charging)

The Galaxy A80 will only hit markets across the globe beginning May 29, while the price is still anyone’s guess. Color options at launch include Angel Gold, Ghost White and Phantom Black.
