Some Malaysian website ending with “.my” may be experiencing inaccessibility

MYNIC, the agency under the arm of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM), regulated by Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced they are currently facing some technical issues with the “.my” domains.

These are the likely effected domain name categories under their administration:

MYNIC holds the responsibility of developing and maintaining domain policies / technologies as follows:-

  1. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6)
  2. DNSSEC (Domain Name Server Security Extensions)
  3. ENUM (Telephone Number Mapping)
  4. Anycast and IDN (Internationalised Domain Names)
  5. Promoting and training activities for the usage of the technologies above

They are currently facing technical issues on item  2 which is related to the DNSSEC (Domain Name Server Extentions).

What is DNSSEC?

Recently vulnerabilities in the DNS were discovered that allow an attacker to hijack the process of looking some one up or looking a site up on the Internet using their name. The purpose of the attack is to take control of the session to, for example, send the user to the hijacker’s own deceptive web site for account and password collection.

DNSSEC is a technology that was developed to, among other things, protect against such attacks by digitally ‘signing’ data so you can be assured it is valid.

Who will be affected?

1. Online banking sites which are hosted on the domains.

2. Mobile Banking apps

3. Online Payment Channels

[15:02 16/06/2018) I have tried accessing Maybank2U, CimbClick, HongLeongConnect and Citibank Online. All was successful and I do not notice any difficulties in accessing.
