Samsung Takes Things To The Next Level With Galaxy S6 & S6 edge

“The most advanced smartphone in the world”, the presenters told the global audience tuning in with bated breath. It’s better, it’s faster and it’s shiny.

In unveiling the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung wants to make a triumphant return they desperately need. Two years of lackluster receptions for their previous flagships, the S4 and S5, have prompted the Korean giant to go back to the drawing board and it marked the birth of “Project Zero”, which morphed into the two jewels in the crown they proudly showed off to the world.

Samsung has finally married substance with style, a thing that has been lacking from their portfolio in recent years. In the two new devices, metal meets glass, two of the most premium materials a phone can ask for. And in true Samsung fashion, they have raised the bar yet again in how powerful a smartphone can be.

By having a Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 577 pixels-per-inch, Samsung can now claim to have the best display in a smartphone and rightly so. The new flagships will arrive ready with Samsung Pay, their answer to Apple Pay.  The cameras were shown to be able to beat even the likes of the iPhone 6 Plus, considered by many as the best smartphone camera in the market today.

Yet, it is the Galaxy S6 edge which stole all the attentions (and hearts), With Dual Edge screens, an evolution from the prototypical Note Edge, it is a futuristic-looking smartphone unlike any other. Unlike the latter in which the two screens work independently, the Dual Edge screens are one with the standard screen. It gives features such as the ability for users to know which contact is calling at a glance with color-coded running light.

Alas, nothing comes perfect. In crafting the exquisite design of the devices, sacrifices have to be made. Waterproof ability is gone. There is no microSD slot for memory expansion and the battery is not removable. Samsung tries to minimize the damage by offering a sizeable variant of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB and a built-in wireless charging battery.

Here are the specs

  • 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display (2560×1440 resolutions;  577ppi)
  • 3GB RAM
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57
  • Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset
  • 32GB/64GB/128GB internal storage (non-expandable)
  • Android 5.0.2 Lollipop
  • LTE Cat.6
  • 16MP rear camera with OIS
  • 5MP front-facing camera
  • 2,550mAh battery (Galaxy S6) & 2,600mAh battery (Galaxy S6 edge)

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge will arrive to 20 countries initially on April 10 in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz (Galaxy S6 only) and Green Emerald (Galaxy S6 edge only) for prices yet to be revealed but with rumors suggesting a starting price of €699 (around RM2,840). Malaysia is unfortunately not included in the list but we could very well get our hands on it in the same month.
