We continue our head to head of brand new BlackBerry 10 devices, and today we will pair up the QWERTY + touchscreen Q10 launched back in 2011, against a device with a similar setup - the venerable BlackBerry Bold 9900.

Both carry the unmistakable BlackBerry design, however the Q10 does come equipped with a larger 3.1-inch Super AMOLED display with higher resolution - 720 x 720 compared to 640 x 480 - when compared to the 2.8-inch Bold 9900. The smartphones' smaller screens make way for QWERTY keyboards, however the Q10 does away with the an optical trackpad.

As far as storage goes, the Bold 9900 has 32GB worth of internal storage along with a microSD slot. The however Q10 comes with double the internal storage (up to 64GB), and an expandable microSD that goes up to 64GB as well.

On the performance front, the Q10 makes a few leaps and bounds against the Bold 9900 - the Q10 has a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 2GB, so it’s not lacking on the performance front. Meanwhile, the Bold 9900 has a single core 1.2GHz processor and 768MB RAM.

With BlackBerry 10, RIM has announced a few features such as a platform-wide flow interface, an intelligent keyboard, as well as a camera app which allows the user to adjust a portrait by moving through time scale to optimise picture quality. So expect a slew of improvements over the BlackBerry OS 7 loaded on the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

Contrary to our earlier report, the Q10 does not come with LTE 4G support, but does come with  a slew of smartphone connectivity options like Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, WiFi hotspot and USB microUSB v2.0. The Bold 9900 has 3G connectivity, and the expected amount of connectivity options on any smartphone.

As with most devices back in 2011, the Bold 9900 comes with 5-megapixel camera capable of capturing 720p video. It also does not come equipped with a front-facing camera. As expected from the latest Q10, there is a 8-megapixel imager that is able to capture 1080p HD video, along with a 2-megapixel front facing camera.

Again our comparison only hopes to highlight the improvements BlackBerry has implemented over the years. Early previews of BlackBerry 10 have so far been impressive. If nothing else the Q10 feels and looks like the closest spiritual successor that BlackBerry fans of an iconic QWERTY + touchscreen device.
