Cross platform NFC tapping works for Nexus 7 and Windows 8 tablet
by Lim Pei Hao
07 August 2012 – Two geeks were experimenting around with NFC sharing between two tablets with different platforms, one is a Nexus 7 running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the other is a Developer’s build Windows 8 tablet.
In the video, they started off by sending a website from Chrome browser from Nexus 7 to the Windows 8 tablet by tapping tablets together. It works flawlessly as a notification on the Windows 8 tablet pops up to request whether user wants to view the link and opens it in Internet Explorer (IE). Sharing links back to the Nexus 7 is more immediate on the Android platform with the Chrome browser launched the link automatically.
Sharing maps from the Nexus 7 is as easy as tapping the two tablets together. However, the Windows 8 tablet would launch web version of Google Maps in IE as it does not have a native Google Maps app. Unfortunately, NFC sharing between cross platform does not support file sharing.
Cross platform sharing is going to be useful for consumers. We do hope operating system developers such as Apple, Google and Microsoft would relax their rules and make data sharing via NFC as easy as possible.
