01 August 2012 – Microsoft has confirmed that its Surface tablets will be launched on October 26 alongside Windows 8.
CNET confirmed the launch date from Microsoft’s annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The report noted that, "The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices,"
The company had earlier mentioned but not confirmed that its Surface RT tablets would be available at the same time as Windows 8 operating system. So it is good to see it on paper.
Microsoft plans to introduce two versions of its Surface tablets - one, the more affordable ARM-based Surface RT. The other is likely the more powerful but pricier Surface Pro, that is powered by Intel Ivy Bridge processors along with Windows 8 Pro.
The October 26 launch date will most likely see the Surface RT being announced, as the company had earlier said its Intel-based Surface Pro will only be revealed 90 days later after the RT, which is probably the start of 2013.
