08 July 2012 – The Apple New iPad also known as the iPad 3 was announced in March 2012 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 was announced in September 2011.

Connectivity-wise, both tablets support HSDPA 21Mbps, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and GPS. These two tablets are powered by a dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM. For internal storage, both tablets come with 16/32/64GB models.

The iPad 3 has a bigger display than its competitor (9.7 vs 7.7-inch).  It has a 9.7-inch IPS display with 1536 x 2048 resolution pixels. It has the same Retina display as found in the Apple’s iPhone that is able to produce accurate and vivid colors. In addition, it has a PowerVR SGX543MP4 quad-core GPU, which gives you a fluid media and gaming experience.

Furthermore, the iPad 3 has a higher megapixel camera than its rival (5 vs 3.15-megapixel), but it is not entirely a deal breaker in this aspect as we think it is just awkward to use a huge tablet to take photos. At the time of writing, iPad 3’s 4G connectivity only supports LTE networks in US and Canada.

The iPad 3 is running on Apple iOS 5.1 and it is upgradeable to iOS 6 this coming fall 2012.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is thinner (7.9 vs 9.4mm) and lighter (340 vs 662g) than the iPad 3. Samsung deploys the Super AMOLED Plus technology on its 7.7-inch display with 800 x 1280 resolution pixels. It is believed that the display is power efficient enough to give you additional hours to utilize the tablet. Although both tablets are powered by the same Cortex-A9 dual-core processor, Samsung has it tweaked at a faster clock speed of 1.4GHz.

Unlike the iPad 3, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 can be used as a phone to make calls and send SMS. There is an earpiece located on the top of the tablet, but we would encourage you to get a Bluetooth headset. Additionally, the Samsung’s tablet also accepts microSD cards up to 32GB, which is an excellent option for heavy downloaders.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb and it is upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. No word from Samsung whether the tablet is eligible for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update yet.

In terms of pricing, we are comparing the price of the 16GB iPad 3 with WiFi and Cellular and the 16GB Galaxy Tab 7.7. iPad 3 is selling at  S$ 658 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is retailing at S$ 839.  Between these two tablets, we would recommend you to go for the iPad 3 if you do not use the telephony feature on your tablet.
