07 June 2012 - Microsoft's homebrewed Surface RT is the centre of attention these days and we are pitting it against a tablet that was just introduced to Malaysia - the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

And aside from sharing WiFi functionality, they are quite different from one another - the Surface RT comes with ARM architecture and is powered by the Nvidia Tegra ARM processor. On the other hand, the Tab 2 10.1 has a dual-core 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM. They also share a microSD slot for expandable memory.

Display-wise, the RT has a 10.6-inch screen with a 16:9 widescreen ratio, so it is smidge larger compared to Tab 2’s 10.1-inch TFT touchscreen. The Surface RT has more pixels crammed inside its screen at 1366 x 768 resolution compared to 1280 x 800 on the Galaxy Tab 2.

The tablets are powered by different operating systems too, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 comes with Android 4.0.3 platform (Ice Cream Sandwich) right out of the box. Samsung has taken ICS and dressed it up with its own TouchWiz UX. The Surface RT on the other hand comes with comes with Windows 8, so in addition to the Metro UI, you can also use the same software you use on a desktop.

Meanwhile, the Surface RT's VaporMg casing is only 9.3mm but the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 at 9.7mm is not that much thicker either. The Galaxy Tab 2 at 588 gram is much almost 100 grams lighter compared to the Surface RT which weigh 676 gram.

The Surface RT has the added advantage of a 3mm Touch Cover which is a protective cover that doubles as a QWERTY keyboard / touchpad.  The RT’s chassis also has a kickstand for you to prop up your tablet, and it comes with a full-USB 2.0 port.

Voice calls is a feature the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 can boast over most tablets, and it comes with a range of connectivity options like HSPA, WiFi Direct and WiFi hotspot. As for internal storage, the RT comes in 32 and 64GB options, while The Galaxy Tab 2 has 16GB onboard memory.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 comes with 3.15-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facing camera, on the other hand the Surface RT’s has front and rear-facing HD cameras.

While Microsoft has yet to announce the official pricing for the RT, the 32GB RT is rumoured to be priced at USD $599 (estimated S$ 762) while the 16GB Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is priced at S$ 798. The difference between them is at S$ 36.

So which one do you choose? We believe it comes down to what you need your tablet for. Samsung has built a relatively affordable device designed for home use, it has a good amount of hardware and we believe it is a good device to surf the web and enjoy multimedia on.

But if you are looking for a device that rivals a netbook, then the Surface RT might fit the bill. With the Windows 8 platform, you can install word processing software and along with the Touch Cover, finish up work on the go. And with the 10.6-inch touchscreen, the RT can easily double as a multimedia device as well.
