20 July 2012 – Back when the Sony Ericsson was still around, we have the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active which was named as the “tough” Android smartphone. We will be comparing it with the latest addition to the Xperia family, the “hassle-free” Xperia Tipo.
There is not much similarity that can be said about both the devices other than they do not offer a secondary camera. However, the main difference between these two devices will be their Operating System. As the earlier released device, the Xperia Active is running on the out-dated Android 2.3, Gingerbread whereas the Xperia Tipo is using Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
The 3.0-inch Xperia Active offers a better clocked processor as compared to the Xperia Tipo (1GHz vs 800MHz). It display screen uses LED for backlight while the Xperia Tipo uses TFT. The device also comes with a 5-megapixels camera capable of 720p video recording. However, the Xperia Tipo only offers up to 3.2-megapixel camera with VGA quality for recording. In addition, the Xperia Active also features a dust proof and water resistant (up to 1metre) chassis.
On the other hand, the 3.2-inch Xperia Tipo offers a slimmer (13.0mm vs 16.5mm) and lighter (99.4grams vs 110.8grams) chassis. It also comes with a larger internal storage capacity (2.5GB vs 1.0GB). Also, it has more colour varieties compared to the Xperia Active (4 colours vs 2 colours).
The Xperia Active is priced at RM800 while the price for the Xperia Tipo is still unavailable. However, from past experience we can expect the Sony Xperia Tipo to be priced at a similar range with the Xperia Active. In this comparison, the Xperia Active proves to have better value for your money, unless you prefer the latest version of Android.
