by Lim Pei Hao

15 July 2012 – The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) was announced in February 2012 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 was announced in September 2011.

Both tablets support HSDPA 21Mbps, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. There is a microSD slot that accepts cards up to 32GB. Plus, both tablets have a 3.15-megapixel camera and a front facing camera for video chats. Unlike all three Apple iPads, these two tablets are capable of making calls and sending SMS.

The size of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is a tad bigger than the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2, due to the larger display (7.7 vs 7.0-inch) it has. However, it is slimmer (7.9 vs 10.5mm) and lighter (340 vs 344g) than its cousin.  The display is known for its vivid color and power efficiency. It also has a higher display resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels than the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0)’s 1024 x 600 resolution pixels.

In addition, the tablet is powered by a 1.4GHz Exynos dual-core processor, which is faster than the 1.0GHz dual-core processor in the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2. The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is preloaded with Android 3.2 Honeycomb, but it is upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There is also a higher battery capacity (5100 vs 4000 mAh) to power the bigger display and the more powerful processor.

On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is a portable tablet that comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. On the downside, the display feels a little cramped to use.

In terms of pricing, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is about S$237 more expensive than the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0). In this comparison, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 would be the tablet to go for as it is superior to its cousin in nearly every aspect.
