21 June 2012 – Alongside the Xperia S, Sony announced the Xperia sola and Xperia U to usher in their brand new NXT range.

The two devices are fairly similar in design, although the Xperia sola has one defining feature that sets it apart from the Xperia U, which is the ‘floating touch’ navigation that allows for web browsing without the user having to make direct contact with the screen.

When we break it down, the Xperia sola is a bit on the bigger side, measuring at 116 x 59 x 9.9 mm while the Xperia U is 112 x 54 x 12 mm. The difference in size does mean that the Xperia sola has slightly bigger 3.7-inch screen, while the Xperia U has to make do with a small 3.5-inch display.

Both these devices are powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor, sharing the same 512MB of RAM. In terms of internal storage, the Xperia sola and Xperia U shares the same amount of 8GB of storage. Take note that you cannot expand the storage of these smartphones via microSD cards.

In conclusion, there are hardly any differences between the two for you to really ponder over. Both the Xperia sola and Xperia U are solid mid-range devices that are fairly reasonable for their respective asking prices of below a grand, though the Xperia sola does have that nifty gimmick (which you will not be using much of anyway).

If you are looking for a decent dual-core device that would not break the bank, you cannot go wrong with either the Xperia sola or the Xperia U.

Sony Xperia sola

3.5G HSDPA + WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Touchscreen candybar, 5.0 MP camera, 8GB Memory, Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread)

Sony is adding another smartphone to its fledging ranks, the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) powered Sola.

Touted is its brand new 'floating touch' navigation, which enables web browsing without touching the screen. Floating touch allows users to navigate the web by hovering their finger above the screen so it acts like a moving curser, without having to touch the screen. Once desired link is found it can be highlighted and a simple tap will load the page.

In addition to the floating touch, the smartphone comes with a 3.7-inch Reality Display (with a Mobile Bravia Engine), a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, NFC (Near Field Communication) and Xperia SmartTags support, as well as 3D surround sound.
