Paypal reveals breakthrough in mobile commerce in Malaysia

14 June 2012 – A study conducted by Paypal revealed that 2011 was a milestone year for mobile commerce in Malaysia. This is fuelled by a rise in the number of mobile shoppers and substantial increase in spend per head – Malaysians spent RM 337 million through their smartphones in 2011, and RM 108 million through tablets.

The findings also showed that almost 40% of these purchases were made at home, with the office being the next most common place, at 20%. Elias Ghanem, Managing Director of PayPal Southeast Asia and India commented that Malaysians prefer access to the Internet on the mobile devices over desktops and notebooks. He also stated that mobile commerce in now mainstream and Malaysian businesses need to invest in mobile friendly retail initiatives to take advantage of this chance in consumer shopping behaviour.
