11 May 2012 – The iPhone 4S is getting some serious competition from Samsung’s latest flagship - the Galaxy SIII. Which is why we are bringing the company’s latest and greatest – the Galaxy SIII and iPhone 4S to our comparison table.

The high-end smartphones share a few similarities including a similar 8-megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p video. Both devices also share connectivity options such as HSPA, WiFi, WiFi hotspot and Bluetooth. There is support for both GPS and GLONASS as well.

But that is where the similarities end - the Samsung Galaxy SIII has a noticeably much larger 4.8-inch screen capable of 720 x 1080 pixels, compared to the 3.5-inch Retina Display on the iPhone 4S that displays 640 x 960 pixels. To complement the SIII’s larger screen, Samsung’s device is both taller and wider but is thinner (8.6mm vs 9.3mm) compared to the 4S.

Another difference is the operating systems powering these two smartphones, the SIII is equipped with Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) skinned with the TouchWiz UX Nature. Samsung says the UX is able to ‘understand’ its user. For example, your SIII will give you a little vibrating nudge when you pick up the phone to tell you there is a missed call or incoming SMS while you are away

On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 4S comes with iOS 5, it comes with Notification Centre, iReminder, iMessages, Twitter integration, and more ways to edit or touch up your photos. The Apple iPhone 4S has an ace in its sleeve - Siri, the voice recognition personal assistant.

They have noticeably different internals too, the Samsung Galaxy SIII has a quad-core Exynos processor with 1GHz RAM, on the other hand the 4S has a dual-core A5x 1GHz processor with 512MB RAM.

There are three internal memory options for the iPhone 4S - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, while the confirmed models for the SIII are the 16GB and 32GB variants, which also comes with a microSD slot capable of 64GB.  The iPhone 4S does not support any external memory expansion option.  The SIII has a few extra connectivity options which include DLNA and WiFi-Direct support.

Despite sharing similar 8-megapixel rear cameras, the cameras have very different features. Apple’s has dubbed their camera the iSight and it has backlight illumination, and an image signal processor that enables face detection and improved white balance. And the camera's sensor is much faster this time around and will only take 1.1 seconds to snap the first shot, and half a second for the next.

On the other hand, the SIII is using a new camera module that allows you to take instantaneous shots at 3.3 shots per second. Plus, Samsung also includes a Burst mode which takes eight continuous shots of the same subject and automatically picks the best one. Also, you can take still shots and record a video with the SIII.

As for their front-facing cameras, the SIII has a 1.9-megapixel camera compared to the iPhone 4S' VGA (0.3-megapixel) camera.

Both are top-of-the line devices and the 16GB Samsung Galaxy SIII is estimated to be priced around 550 Euros (estimated S$888), while the 16GB Apple iPhone 4S costs S$860, which means the price difference is insignificant.

It is hard to pick one smartphone on top of the other. But from the specs sheet at least, the SIII does appear to have an advantage. There are more connectivity options, more processing power and if you an advocate of bigger is better than the SIII’s 4.8-inch will certainly suit you.

The Apple iPhone 4S may have some edge over Samsung Galaxy SII  in terms of its asthetics or brand image.  If you are one who are more technically inclined or "adventurous", an Android phone, SIII, which is generally more open, may be more suitable for you.
