21 April 2012 – Daring Fireball's John Gruber says that Apple is working on a smaller version of the iPad in the bowels of Cupertino. Gruber detailed a 7.85-inch prototype that runs at 1024 x 768, smiliar to the displays on the iPad 1 and iPad 2.

The screen would offer around 163 pixels per inch and would remove the need for apps to be updated, unlike the Retina Display apps. As for its design, the device is purportedly as tall as its bigger version but is narrow when held in portrait mode.

Steve Jobs famously remarked that a 7-inch tablet as 'dead on arrival' and that it should come with sandpaper so that users can file their fingers down to use the much smaller screen.

Rumours of a smaller iPad have been floating around for quite a bit, and Sterne Agee analyst Shaw We told the Washington Post that a 7-inch is not a question of if but when. He added that it would be difficult for others to gain traction in the tablet market.

According to analysts, a smaller iPad will apparently will help dominate the Asian markets over here as well, as the iPad is use to replace their morning paper. A smaller device will make help iPads users access their content easier.
