Translated by Loh Ving Sung
17 April 2012 - We are bringing a pair of new entry-level smartphones to the comparison table, the Nokia Lumia 610 vs the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2.
They both share a touchscreen, along with WiFi, HSPA, EDGE and Bluetooth connectivity. Both phones are also equipped with a processor with the same 800MHz clock speed. There is also A-GPS support on both devices. The similarities end there, as both devices are powered by different operating systems, the Nokia Lumia 610 is powered by the Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) while the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 is powered by Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread).
Despite being affordable, the Nokia Lumia 610 has a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p videos, while the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 has a 3.15-megapixel camera.
Display-wise, the Lumia 610 has 3.7-inch touchscreen displaying 480 x 800 pixels when compared to the slightly smaller 3.27-inch screen displaying 320 x 480 pixels on the Mini 2. The Lumia 610’s screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.
On the connectivity front, the Galaxy Mini 2 boasts WiFi hotspot and WiFi Direct support.
They have slightly different internal hardware too, the Galaxy Mini 2 has 512MB RAM vs the 256MB on the Lumia 610. There is 4GB of internal memory with a microSD slot on the Mini 2 vs the 8GB internal memory on the Lumia 610.
As for the look and feel, the Lumia 610 is wider, taller and just a smidge thicker than its counterpart (12mm vs 11.6mm). The Mini 2 is also lighter at 105 grams compared to the 131 grams Lumia 610.
The rumoured pricing for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 is GBP 179.95 (estimated at RM 876), while the Lumia 610 is set at 189 Euros (estimated at RM 762). So there is a RM 114 or about 15% price difference between both devices.
While they are both armed with similar specs, we would pick the Lumia 610. Don’t get us wrong, the Mini 2 is both affordable and armed with some decent specs, along with interesting connectivity options such as WiFi hotspot and WiFi direct support.
But the Lumia 610 has a much more vibrant design for an entry level phone, and matches the hardware on the Mini 2 while throwing in a higher megapixel camera and bigger display. The phone’s Mango operating system should give the Lumia 610 that extra bit of functionality.
