April 13, 2012
by Jonathan Cheah

13 April 2012 – The Sony Xperia S was announced during CES 2012. The Motorola Atrix 2 was announced in October 2011. The S is the successor to the Arc S, itself an upgrade to the original Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc.

Both quad-band devices have almost identical weight, 144g vs 147g for the Motorola. They have the same 4.3-inch screen but the Sony has better resolution. Both devices are Android OS devices.

The Sony Xperia S has better onboard storage (32 vs 8 GB). It also has better resolution (720 x 1280 pixels vs 540 x 960 pixels) despite having the same size screen. This works out to 342 vs 256 ppi.

On paper, it has a better processor (1.5GHz vs 1GHz dual core). It also has a higher rated camera (12 vs 8-megapixels) behind and in front (1.3 vs 0.3-megapixels).

The Motorola Atrix 2 is a less competitve in many aspects in this comparison. It does have a slightly larger battery (1785 vs 1750 mAh) but that is barely noticeable and subject to the power efficiency of the device. Our figures indicate that the rival does better at standby time, so it is obvious that the other phone has better power efficiency.

At a glance, the Xperia S is a much better option than the Atrix 2 despite only three months between the devices.  The price difference between the two models is around S$ 200.  So it is up to individuals whether the difference in the performance as stated above is worth more than S$200 price difference between the Sony Xperia S and Motorola Atrix 2.
