Gadget of the Month - Apple new iPad
By Jonathan Cheah
22 March 2012 – The 3rd-generation iPad (iPad3) is our gadget of the month for March. It is also the first tablet to muscle its way into the ranks of our usual monthly picks for special handphones.
Although not yet sold in Malaysia, it is already on sale in other countries, and we already have one in our test lab. But how could we not select a device that sold three million units in the first three days?
The new iPad comes with an A5X processor capable of quad-core graphics processing. Apple claims that it is four times faster than NVIDIA’s Tegra platform. Apple also claims 4G speeds up to 73Mbps. Please do take note that the 4G of third generation iPad is not compatible with 4G networks of Singapore Telcos from M1 or SingTel.
The new iPad is a global device capable of GSM and CDMA data networks and it can work as a personal hotspot. There is a 5-megapixel illuminated sensor on the back called the iSight - a 5-element lens, IR filter, and ISP built into the A5X chip. There is also 1080p video recording with video stabilisation.
iOS 5.1 supports voice dictation, simply tap the microphone key on your tablet and you can convert voice into text. The dictation supports English, French, German and Japanese languages.
Battery life is around 10 hours, just like the iPad2, and 9 hours on LTE networks The new iPad has a Retina Display that goes up to 2048 x 1536 resolution with a pixel density of 264ppi.
It will be here eventually, but for now the nearest place we can get it is across the causeway.
