Maxis offers fixed-line broadband service

April 1, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis has launched a fixed-line broadband Internet service, called Maxis Home Services, giving Malaysian websurfers more choices for high-speed broadband access.

The service touts Internet speeds of up to 4Mbps (megabits per second), 6Mbps and 10Mbps, and the packages are priced at RM128, RM158 and RM218 a month, respectively.

Maxis has a data download cap on each of the packages - 30GB for the 4Mbps service, 60GB for the 6Mbps, and 100GB for the 10Mbps.

It is targeting the services at Internet users in the major urban areas of the country.

Maxis Home Services goes beyond telecommunications and encompasses a full suite of multiple-play services.

"It offers integrated communication. broadband access, IPTV (television via the Web), VoIP (telephony over the Internet), which is all part of our Maxis Home Services," said Sandip Das, Maxis chief executive officer.

Also bundled in are several value-added services, such as a lifestyle portal - mylaunchpad - and online security.

The rollout of Maxis Home Services is dependent on the progress of the fibre-optic network being built now by telecommunications giant Telekom Malaysia as part of TM's Unifi high-speed broadband initiative.

However, Maxis pointed out that the value-added services are already being enjoyed by subscribers of its wireless broadband packages.

Maxis Home Service is the result of an agreement between TM and Maxis, signed last December. The deal enables Maxis to offer its own high-speed broadband services that ride on TM's infrastructure.

"We are able to expand our broadband footprint to fast-track our delivery of Maxis Home Services to our customers," said Das.

Maxis is building its own fibre-optic network and laying its cables via electricity poles to extend the reach of its Maxis Home Services.

With its own fibre-optic network and piggybacking TM's Unifi infrastructure, Das said Maxis expects to reach 1.3 million homes by next year.

In comparison, the Unifi packages are 5Mbps (RM149), 10Mbps (RM199) and 20Mbps (RM249). There is a data download cap on each of the packages - 120GB for the 20Mbps service, 90GB for the 10Mbps, and 60GB for the 5Mbps. However, TM has yet to implement the data caps.

There are other fixed-line broadband service providers, but these do not provide extensive coverage.
