18 December 2011 - While Android-powered tablets continue to be manufactured, Apple still monopolizes the tablet market according to IDC’s latest report. The research suggested that the iPad has a share of 61.5% of the worldwide market, down from 63.3% last quarter. Android devices also experienced a slight dip down from 33.2% to 32.4%.

This is partly because of the HP TouchPad’s final push to bump up the webOS tablet to third place at 5%, with an estimated 903,354 sold. Samsung kept its Honeycomb tablet crown with 5.6% of total sales, closely followed by Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color with 4.5% and Asus, at fifth place, had 4%. Nevertheless, tablets sold less than analyst predictions but still expanded by 264% compared to the same time frame last year. E-readers outperformed expectations with 6.5 million sold, up 165.9% last year. IDC expects new tablets to change these statistics for the fourth quarter.
