Comparison - iPhone 4S vs Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

November 2, 2011
by Jonathan Cheah

02 November 2011 The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S was announced in September 2011 and the Apple iPhone 4S was announced in October 2011.

Both are the flagship devices for their respective brands at this point in time, and are improvements over similarly named predecessors. Certainly, in the last few years these two manufacturers have built an ardent following amongst the masses.

Both the Apple iPhone 4S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S are quad-band devices. The Apple iPhone 4S supports both CDMA and GSM systems in one device. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S weighs 117g and the Apple iPhone 4S weighs 140g.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S is available in a lot more colours than the Apple iPhone 4S, which is only available in Black or White.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S displays 480 x 854 pixels onto a 4.2-inch screen and the Apple iPhone 4S displays 640 x 960 pixels onto a 3.5-inch screen. Although still on one of smallest screens in this age of touchscreen phones, the Apple iPhone 4S appears to have the better resolution from these specifications.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S uses a 1.4 GHz single-core Qualcomm processor to drive Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread). The Apple iPhone 4S uses a dual-core 1 GHz A5 processor to drive iOS 5.

The Apple iPhone 4S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S both have an 8-megapixel main camera. The iPhone 4S has a front-facing camera, which the Xperia Arc S does not have. The Apple iPhone 4S records video at a maximum of 1920x1080 (1080p HD) and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S records video at a maximum of 1280x720 (720p HD).

The Apple iPhone 4S comes in 16, 32 and 64GB versions and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S has a paltry 512 MBs of storage. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S can accept microSD cards of up to 32 GBs.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S is about 60% of the price of the Apple iPhone 4S. However, the Apple iPhone 4S appears to have generated very strong interest in the aftermath of the passing of Steve Jobs. The initial sales figures have it outselling all previous versions of the Apple iPhone.

The initial reports also have it that the Apple iPhone 4S comes with a huge improvement in performance over the preceding Apple iPhone 4. If that is the case, then the Apple iPhone 4S should outperform the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S. Whether that justifies paying so much more is for you to decide.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S also has really pathetic onboard storage which forces you to shell out a bit more for a storage card. I would say that it is pretty even between both these devices, except for the price that is quoted for the iPhone brand.

Its exterior is similar to the iPhone 4, but the phone gets the A5 dual-core processor, which Apple claims will be able to run graphics seven times faster than its predecessor. Last year's antenna issue is also addressed, the iPhone's steel band is able to 'intelligently' switch between antenna's for improve call quality.

Other iPhone 4S exclusives, is the Siri voice recognition system, for example you ask Siri a question example "Do I need a raincoat today?" Siri will try and make sense of it and responds "It sure looks like rain today." Other examples include "What is the time in Kuala Lumpur?" Siri will then show you the world clock. Yes it comes with iOS 5, but only 4S users will be able to enjoy it.

And it will take 1.1 seconds to take the first shot, and half a second for the next. 1080p video recording is supported too.

The battery is still able to handle the dual-core processor with 8 hours of talk time, 14 hours of 2g talk time, 6 hours of 3g browsing, 9 hours of WiFi browsing. The 4S will have 14.4 HSPA + downlink, an improvement over the iPhone 4's 7.2 Mpbs.
