25 October 2011 - BlackBerry may have cornered the enterprise market, but can the Apple iPhone 4S win over some BlackBerry users? We will be lining up the Apple iPhone 4S against the BlackBerry Bold 9900 to find out.

Design-wise, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 continues the Bold's QWERTY keyboard and screen design. However, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 receives an upgrade in the form of 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen that display 640 x 480 pixels. However, the Retina Display which display 960 x480 pixels on the Apple iPhone 4S does give the BlackBerry's display a run for its money.

Underneath the hood, the Apple iPhone 4S gets a dual-core 1GHz A5 chipset with 512MB RAM. As for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, it comes with a 1.2GHz processor with 768MB RAM. It is hard to gauge which device will have more of a punch, but we suspect both will be neck in neck in the performance race. As for the memory, the Apple iPhone 4S has three versions - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. On the BlackBerry Bold 9900, there is 8GB internal memory with a microSD slot that supports up to 32GB.

On the connectivity front, the Apple iPhone 4S is a world phone with both CDMA + GSM support. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the GSM version in the Bold catalogue, there is also a BlackBerry 9930 that works specifically for CDMA networks. Both smartphones, comes with the similar HSPA receiver that is able go up to 14.4Mbps on the downlink. There is WiFi functionality, but WiFi hotspot is only available on the Apple iPhone 4S, there is Bluetooth support as well. However the Apple iPhone 4S comes with v4.0 receiver, while the BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes with the much more common v2.1.

Hardware aside, the Apple iPhone 4S gets the iOS 5 update, which comes with features like the Notification Centre, iReminder, iMessages, Twitter integration, and more ways to edit or touch up your photos. Both phones are upgradable to iOS5. There is also Siri, the voice recognition personal assistant.

As for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, it comes equipped with BlackBerry OS 7 which is optimised for a touchscreen device, and comes a new and improved BlackBerry browser, BlackBerry Messenger 6, hardware accelerated Liquid Graphics, and support for new apps on the BlackBerry App World storefront. More importantly, enterprise users who insist on security will still be able to rely on BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

We can guess that the Apple iPhone 4S will be priced at RM2190 and RM2590 for the 16GB and 32GB version. If we compare the 32GB Apple iPhone 4S to the RM2188 BlackBerry Bold 9900 we will have a 16 percent difference or RM402 between the two of them. The closest estimated for the 64GB version comes from Singapore which is priced at $1238 SGD (estimated RM3060).

So will the enterprise user make the jump to the Apple iPhone 4S? We are guessing no. With its good looks and accessible operating system, the Apple iPhone 4S may appeal to casual users, in spite of its pricing. But for the serious enterprise user or BlackBerry addict, the Apple iPhone 4S is going to be a tough sell for you. It has no BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) to secure your sensitive emails, or shield your browsing and BlackBerry Messenger.
