October 17, 2011
by Jonathan Cheah

17 October 2011 The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S was announced in September 2011 and the Nokia N9 was announced in June 2011.

Both the Nokia N9 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S are quad-band devices. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S weighs 117g and the Nokia N9 weighs 135g.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S displays 480 x 854 pixels onto a 4.2-inch screen and the Nokia N9 displays 480 x 854 pixels onto a 3.9-inch screen. The Nokia N9 appears to have the better resolution from these specifications.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S uses a 1.4 GHz single-core Qualcomm processor to drive Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread). The Nokia N9 uses a single-core 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor to drive MeeGo.

The Nokia N9 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S both have an 8-megapixel main camera. Both devices also have a front-facing camera, something which the original Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc did not have. The Nokia N9 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S both record video at 1280x720 (720p HD).

The Nokia N9 comes in 16 and 64GB versions and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S has a paltry 512 MBs of storage. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S can accept microSD cards of up to 32 GBs.

The prices for both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and the Nokia N9 are fairly close. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S appears to have a better processor and a more common Android OS. However, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S also has really pathetic onboard storage which forces you to shell out a bit more for a storage card. I would say that it is pretty even between both these devices.

The Xperia Arc S is revised version of the original Xperia Arc. Sony Ericsson has bumped up the processor to 1.4GHz and added 3D and 2D sweep panorama photography. Among other features would be similar with the original Xperia arc including 4.2-inch Reality display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine (480 x 854 resolution pixels), 8.1-megapixel camera with Exmor R image sensor, 320MB internal storage and supports microSD card up to 32GB.

Nokia has just introduced its Nokia N9, touted to be the first-ever pure touch smartphone, which essentially translates to zero front-facing buttons. Every function will require finger gestures, where for example, while using an application, users need only to swipe from the edge of the screen to return to the home screen. The device will apparently be running on MeeGo Harmattan. The device will boast a 3.9-inch with 480 x 854 screen resolution and an 8-megapixel camera. This MeeGo-powered candybar device will ship in magenta, cyan and black, and boast 16GB and 64GB variants, with 1GB of RAM under the hood.
