Qualcomm launches multi-platform app store
19 May 2009 – Mobile silicon giant Qualcomm has entered the fast-growing app store space with a new product that it claims will work across multiple devices and operating platforms. Plaza Retail - part of the San Diego-based vendor's Plaza suite of solutions - claims to offer developers and publishers a wider range of distribution channels then existing app stores. The product will initially support the Java, BREW and Flash platforms with later support planned for Google's Android, Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian and LiMo. "Success in this market will be dictated by delivering mobile retail experiences across multiple platforms and networks, backed by a healthy ecosystem of publishers with an automated, transparent supply chain," said Arvin Chander, vice president and general manager of Plaza Retail. Qualcomm said that one key advantage for Plaza Retail over app stores that are linked to a single device or platform is the ability for customers to keep applications they have purchased when they upgrade or change devices.
Plaza Retail consists of a management centre that manages pricing, licensing, packaging, promotions, placement, segmentation, personalisation, delivery and analytics across multiple platforms; and a multi-platform client, Web, or mobile Web (WAP) storefront and storefront management portal. The product will be offered in addition to Qualcomm's BREW content delivery platform, which the vendor says has registered 2 billion paid transactions to date and serves as the foundation for the Plaza suite of services. Qualcomm said that Plaza Retail will be targeted at both new customers and the BREW community. ♠ JC
