Touchscreens help Samsung exceed 2009 target
30 November 2009 – Samsung – the world’s second-largest handset vendor – said today that it expects to exceed its mobile devices shipments target for 2009, reports the Wall Street Journal. In further evidence that the South Korean vendor is outperforming the wider handset sector, Samsung said that strong sales of touchscreen devices means it will surpass its target of 200 million units, but did not give a revised figure. It said it had sold around 40 million touchscreen devices during the January-November period, compared with around 10 million sold last year. JK Shin, executive vice-president and head of Samsung’s mobile division, said the vendor would continue its strategy of introducing touchscreen devices customised for specific regional markets.
Samsung said its touchscreen models will account for around 20 percent of total mobile devices sales this year, compared with about 5 percent last year. In an upbeat market forecast earlier this month, the vendor said that its global device shipments will grow by 10-20 percent next year. 2010 will also see Samsung launch its in-house mobile platform known as bada, alongside Windows Mobile- and Android-based platforms. However, Samsung has hinted that the launch of bada may mean it does not rollout any new Symbian-based models to the global market in 2010. ♠ JC
