Analysis: Nokia N97
09 December 2008 – Last week, Nokia kept the world in suspense by announcing that a phone would be launched, but providing no further details. Amazingly, nothing was leaked and everyone was kept guessing.
However, most experts agreed that the phone was likely to be a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone, which had by now dominated nearly all the headlines on mobile equipment for 2008.
That would mean that the phone was likely to be a touchscreen device, and the N97 did not disappoint in this matter. This is Nokia’s second series-60 touchscreen device after the 5800 XpressMusic, but the third after 2004’s Nokia 7710 which ran Nokia Series 90.
As you can see in the picture, the full keyboard that slides out from under the screen and tilts up a little at an angle which is similar to the HTC TyTN II and HTC Touch Pro in design. However, the N97’s screen tilts up a little at an angle.
Jonas Geust, a Vice President of Nokia said, “The Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence.”
Our Opinion:
It would be more accurate to say that the N97 is more a member of the Communicator and E-Series product lines. Although many have touted it as the iPhone killer, we see the succeeding model to the N95 and N96 as merely another step in S60 product line.
Having said this, the pertinent question that needs to be asked is this. Given the timing of the product announcement, what does Nokia have to top this launch at the major trade shows in Q1 of 2009?
