Shazalli takes over as Celcom CEO
BY SABRY TAHIR
TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) has appointed Natseven TV Sdn Bhd (ntv7) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Mohammed Shazalli Ramly to head Celcom (M) Bhd, effective Sept 1.
Shazalli replaces Datuk Mohamed Yunus Ramli Abbas who will complete his three-year tenure as chief executive officer on Aug 31.
TM group chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar said Shazalli’s appointment came after a thorough search for “someone with extensive marketing experience, familiar with the communications and multimedia industry and had the experience of a CEO.”
“Celcom operates in a highly competitive environment. There is, therefore, a need to ensure a smooth leadership transition. We need to ensure the new CEO is able to drive the company from day one,” he said in a statement.
The 44-year-old Shazalli has been ntv7 CEO since the launch of Malaysia’s seventh terrestrial TV station in 1998.
TM and Celcom chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Radzi Mansor said he was confident Shazalli would further build on the foundation laid by Ramli during his tenure.
Shazalli, who holds a MBA from St Louis University, Missouri, US, has more than 18 years' experience in marketing, having worked with a number of major fast-moving consumer goods companies locally and abroad.
Prior to ntv7, Shazalli was marketing director in Asia Broadcasting Network for two years where he was involved in the launch of Astro.
Before joining the broadcasting industry, he had served with Lever Brothers, followed by Malaysian Tobacco Co and British American Tobacco. He is also vice-chairman of the Multimedia Commission Content Forum and a member of the Fama board.
