OPPO teases in-screen camera phone

Brian Shen, VP for OPPO, showcased on Weibo the image quality of the in-screen camera technology that the company plans to implement in future devices.

From the looks of it, early implementation will not be too good, as the quality is far from satisfactory. After OPPO announced the technology earlier in June 2019, Shen stated that at present, the screen camera is unable to produce the same image quality of a non-screen camera. On top of loss in optical quality, the technology is also hard to be mass produced. In order to offer users with more real estate, smartphone makers have had to cut down the size of the upper bezel through various methods, such as notches, a pop-up front camera and punch hole design.

That said, the technology will only improve in time, as when in-screen fingerprint technology was introduced a few years back, it was far from perfect too. Also, don’t be too surprised to see a different company join the bandwagon and come up with a better offering before OPPO does.
