MP4 file exploit on WhatsApp made smartphones vulnerable

Facebook has just posted an advisory highlighting a flaw that allows MP4 files to be exploited in WhatsApp, although the issue has been resolved already in recent patches. The flaw also applies to older version of the Enterprise and Business versions of the application.

The exploit essentially allows attackers to send a file disguised as an MP4 video to the device of the victim before remotely executing a malicious code should the file be accessed. The infected file could result in a remote code execution and denial of service that could lock users out of applications, while allowing hackers access to sensitive data.

No users have been affected by the flaw so far, although it is advised that everyone keeps their WhatsApp version to be the latest.
