Mini LED Displays to become the focus for smartphone makers

OLED displays are mostly used on most high-end smartphones, with more and more companies moving from traditional LCD displays to premium OLED for flagship models. Even Apple shifted to OLED with the iPhone X, and it is said the Cupertino giant could be occupying more of Samsung’s productions as the new generation 2018 iPhones are expected to have AMOLED displays.

With Apple taking up a lot of OLED display production, with LG too being suggested to supply panels to the company, other manufacturers like Huawei, Xiaomi, and OPPO looking for alternative display technologies. They are supposedly deciding on mini LED-backlit display panels instead of AMOLED panels to combat possible supply shortage. The Chinese companies have asked Taiwan based display makers to start producing the displays in the second half of 2018 (June), around when Apple starts mass producing new generation iPhones.

Digitimes reports that technological improvement in mini LED chip designs will help reduce production cost, so more smartphone manufacturers would willingly use this tech, so more smartphones with mini LED displays should be seen by the end of the year.
