The NEX Is vivo’s Concept Phone Turns Real Featuring A “Elevating” Camera

vivo is leading the charge for smartphone innovation by officially announcing the Nex, the company’s latest and boldest attempt to create the “perfect” bezel-less phone. You may remember the vivo Apex concept phone that set the tech world alight at MWC 2018 with its front camera that pops out from within the device. The vivo Nex is the Apex that consumers can actually buy.

Opting for the unusual but workable mechanism means vivo is able to eliminate the much-hated notch altogether, resulting in a more-immersive-than-ever display with 91.24% screen-to-body ratio, the stuff that many smartphone enthusiasts have been dreaming as the future of smartphones. The Nex, like the Apex before it, also employs an in-screen fingerprint reader that operates on a specific area at the bottom half of the display.

Taking a page from Samsung’s implementation of their Bixby virtual assistant, vivo has also introduced their very own called Jovi, which can be easily (or accidentally) summoned via a press on its dedicated button on the left of the device.

The Nex doesn’t just rely on its “screen gimmicks” alone (if you could call it that) to sell units as it is a hardware beast in its own right, packing some really, really beefy specs.

  • 6.59-inch Super AMOLED display (2316 x 1080 pixels)
  • 8GB RAM
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor
  • 256GB internal storage memory
  • Dual SIM
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • Android 8.1 Oreo (with Funtouch OS 4.0)
  • 12MP + 5MP dual rear cameras
  •  8MP front -facing “elevating camera”
  • 4,000mAh battery

The Nex comes in two variants – the flagship model detailed above known as the NEX S, and a cheaper NEX A model that uses a Snapdragon 710 chipset, lower 6GB RAM and 128GB storage as well as a traditional rear fingerprint reader. Sadly, the vivo Nex is a China-exclusive purchase for now. The NEX S retails for CNY4,998 (around RM3,120) while the NEX A goes for CNY4,498 (around RM2,805).

Those of us in Malaysia can instead turn our heads to the recently-launched vivo X21, which features a similar in-screen fingerprint reader but comes with a notch. You can learn more about it in our launch coverage.
