The Xiaomi Black Shark gaming smartphone is official

At an unveil event in Beijing, China, Xiaomi-backed Black Shark gaming company unveiled the Black Shark gaming phone, its first gaming smartphone. With impressive specs like 18:9 display, 8GB RAM, Snapdragon 845, dual cameras and massive battery, its major highlight is actually the feature where users can attach a Bluetooth gaming controller for the full gaming experience.

The Black Shark gaming phone measures 161.6 x 75.4 x 9.25mm, weighing 190 grams. It looks like a typical smartphone from the front, but the hardware inside, sports-car rear design and ability to support a Shark GamePad controller makes it a gaming monster. A dedicated Shark Key on the left side gives access to the gaming zone, while the volume and power keys are on the right. Dual rear cameras and a green “S” logo is on the rear of the phone.

The 5.99-inch InCell display supports Full HD+ (2160 x 1080) resolution with 18:9 aspect ratio and DCI-P3 color gamut. For smoother video quality, it comes with MEMC intelligent motion compensation technology. The fingerprint sensor and home button is on the bezel below the display.

The Black Shark gaming phone uses the Snapdragon 845 chipset. CEO Wu Shimin revealed the device scoring 279,464 on AnTuTu at the event. A multi-layer cooling system that has high thermal conductivity copper alloy substrate, heat pipe, nano composite graphite and liquid cooling maintains the phone’s internal temperature. It can lower the device’s temperature by 8 degrees with 20 times more efficient cooling.

The Black Shark base variant has a 6GB RAM and 64GB UFS 2.1 storage, the highest model having 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. The 4,000mAh battery comes with 18W fast charging support through Quick Charge 3.0, promising up to 5 hours of “King of Glory” continuous play. JOY UI, a custom Android Oreo ROM is loaded onto the device, also featuring some MIUI aspects. The fingerprint sensor can swap to Shark Dock that has features like silent mode, DND and others.

A f/1.75 aperture 12MP primary sensor (1.25micron pixel) and f/1.75 aperture 20MP secondary sensor (1.0micron pixel) makes up the dual camera setup. It includes features like 6p lenses, dual-tone LED flash, PDAF, HDR, Portrait Mode and Panorama. A 20MP f/2.2 aperture and 5p lens is for selfies, with features like intelligent beauty and 4K 30fps video shooting. Both run an independent image processor by Pixelworks.

By connecting the Bluetooth-enabled gaming Shark GamePad at the top portion of the phone, does the Black Shark Phone become a true gaming device. A joystick, trigger and 340mAh battery rolled into one, it can last up to 30 hours. The gamepad can also be used with Android devices that support Bluetooth 4.0 and Android 4.4 and above.

Other connectivity features include USB-C, WiFi 802.11ac, 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G VoLTE, dual-SIM support, GPS, AGPS and GLONASS. An X-shaped smart antenna design means there will be no signal connectivity issues no matter the orientation of the device. The device is also packed with Hi Fi audio, Biso stereo speakers and dual Smart PA for amplified audio. The phone’s microphone can also be used for voice calls and radio chat.

The 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage versions go for CNY 2,999 (MYR1,856.60) and CNY 3,499 respectively. Sold separately is the Shark GamePad at CNY 179. We do not know if the device will be sold outside China at this point in time.
