The Motorola Moto X5 may have been cancelled

Since the Moto X4 was well received, Motorola was said to be working on the Moto X5, its successor. Details of this smartphone appeared online in January, but according to latest reports, the Lenovo-owned company have apparently cancelled the Moto X5. The report says the Moto X5 cancellation is part of the company’s layoff exercise. Motorola had recently confirmed the layoffs in its Chicago office, but announced the Moto Z-series would be unscathed.

The report further adds that the company’s approach to Moto Mods will be changing. Instead of Moto Mods for niche markets, Motorola will instead focus on those that can “turn a profit”. The focus is now shifting to three of its popular smartphone series – Moto G, Moto E and Moto Z. The Moto X-series could come back, though highly unlikely.

Motorola is currently gearing up to launch its next-generation Moto G-series smartphones starting with three models – Moto G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play. Motorola will also be launching three models for the E-series including the Moto E5, E5 Plus, and E5 Play.

There is currently no information on the launch date and pricing of either E5 and G6 series. Since the Moto E4 was unveiled in June last year, the E5 series will probably be around the same time frame this year. The G-series is also expected to launch in Q2 2018.
