Screen wakeup on the Samsung Galaxy S8 leads to battery drain

According to reports, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is experiencing inadvertent screen wakeup which subsequently is causing battery drain. Several users have gone to the official Samsung community and Reddit to post videos detailing exactly what it going on. At first the issue is seemingly limited to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, although apparently some Note 8 users are affected as well.

The issue seems to happen when a user has turned the screen off normally using the power button or screen timeout. The screen then purportedly turns back on showing the lock screen and stays lit for about 10 seconds or so, repeating the process. As you might imagine, this takes place throughout the day, leading to the battery drain. Using a flip cover does not alleviate the problem either.

Users are also claiming that factory reseting the device, rebooting in safe mode, and wiping the cache partition do not solve anything.
