Samsung shows off foldable displays, smartphones at CES

Samsung was at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 not just to unveil new devices like smart TVs, computers and home appliances, but also its first foldable smartphones to select clients through a private meeting. The company supposedly showcased foldable smartphones with both fold-in and fold-out design at the meeting. A commercial launch of the fold-in smartphone is expected first with plans to begin production from November. The infolding type apparently has a drastic curvature rate, but the outfolding design is considered to be more advanced technology.

Samsung supposedly showed a foldable smartphone through a private conference at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 event too, with an upgraded version shown at CES 2018. Samsung invited different types of clients to gauge customer response to the meeting.

One exhibitor at the private viewing of CES 2018 said Samsung’s foldable phone has a 7.3-inch foldable OLED screen. The smartphone with fold-in design has a bendable curvature off 1R, while 5R for the fold-out design, suggesting both foldable phones can be folded like paper. Older reports say the phones may not have glass panels, but polymer OLED.

Curvature implementation is a difficult process, with smartphones with foldable screens can easily break if it falls to the ground. Samsung’s R&D have supposedly dropped them 20 million times a day to ensure durability. Development is said to be finished, and now is working on raising expectations for the launch. The device may be unveiled at the end of the year or early 2019. Apple is reportedly also working on a foldable smartphone, with Samsung said to be providing the screen.
