Greenpeace has ranked Samsung in the bottom tier for its eco-friendliness, out of 17 technology companies. Firms were scored on their use of recycled materials, reduction of emissions through renewable energy and elimination of hazardous chemicals.

Greenpeace says that with Samsung being the largest manufacturer of smartphones and the largest supplier of displays, its manufacturing system relies heavily on fossil fuels. As it turns out, Samsung had reportedly use more than 16,000 GWh of energy in 2016 and just 1% of it was accounted for by renewable sources. Emissions reportedly gone up 24% since 2014 and are expected to increase by an additional 15% end-2017.

Greenpeace has sought to shift their supply chains to renewable energy, cut down cycle of constant consumption of more minerals as well as to find alternatives to hazardous chemicals.
