There exists several security functions for smartphones, ranging from PIN to facial recognition. It would seem that Samsung has patented one we have yet to see, in the form of palm scanning.

Palm Scan Samsung

That said, Samsung’s palm scanning approach is different from what one would normally associate it with, as it does not require that you place your hands on the screen of your device. According to the patent description, the technology does not even unlock the phone itself, but rather provides a hint as to what the password is.

For examples, should you forget your password, you merely point your camera at your palm. The sensor will then scan the lines of your palm, where upon a match, different characters of your password will be displayed across the captured image. This serves as a hint that should help you remember your password.

This method certainly sounds more cumbersome than it should, but only a real world test will help us arrive at a conclusion.
