According to US-based consultancy firm Interbrand, Samsung has essentially dethroned Toyota for the first time to become the most valuable brand in Asia. The Best Global Brands 2017 list from Interbrand has a total of 11 companies from Asia. Companies based in South Korea have improved their positions on the list compared against their rivals from Japan.

The list has Samsung in sixth place, up one position from 2016, which is quite a feat given the recent challenges that the company has faced, one of which is the conviction of its heir Lee Jae-yong on bribery charges.

Masahito Namiki, CEO of Interband in Japan, stated that “Samsung has made it a policy of strengthening its brand in the past 10 years.” Despite the turmoil at the top, Samsung had managed to limits its adverse effects to the brand.

US-based companies take up the top five spots, with Apple at the very top, followed by Google, Microsoft, Coca-Cola and Amazon. Samsung is the first non-US company to make the list and it’s in sixth position, the first for an Asian company on the list. Toyota sits in seventh.
