Camera to be the prime focus of the next Huawei flagship

When Huawei was promoting its P9 flagship, the company shared a photo supposedly captured by the P9’s dual rear shutters. The photo did have very crisp, clear details, but it turns out the photo was taken by the Canon EOS 5D Mark III shutter instead, a DSLR camera worth $4500 back in July 2016. Huawei seems to have taken the incident as a challenge to develop a smartphone camera with similar DSLR quality.

Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu) hinted at this in an interview with Android Authority at CES 2018, on camera tech and AI integration being the next opportunities for smartphone manufacturers, and specifically stating the company wants to bring DSLR like focal lengths and zoom to mobile. Huawei itself has made massive progress with AI integration with its Kirin 970 chip and EMUI 8.0 ROM with AI capabilities.

Huawei won’t be the first to launch a smartphone with a DSLR-like camera though, as Panasonic’s CM1 and Nokia’s Lumia 1020 has done so. Whether it becomes a trend can’t be known yet, but the feature itself could be on the next Huawei P20 flagship expected to launch soon.
