Huawei’s ban to be topic of discussion between US tech executives and the White House

US officials Steven Mnuchin (Treasury Secretary) and Larry Kudlow (White House economic adviser) will be meeting in the White House on Monday to discuss the Huawei band, joined with semiconductor and software executives.

A White House official confirms the meeting, but that it will be mostly economic matters. Google and Micron have representatives at the meeting.

Huawei was classified a threat to national security in May at the US Department of Commerce’s decision, due to the company’s “involvement in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States”. Many US-based companies were forced to stop operations with Huawei, Google being part of them.

Commerce Department Secretary Wilbur Ross mentioned licenses are to be issued where there’s no threat to national security, with companies possibly being able to restart new sales in a few weeks according to Reuters. A lighter ban will allow Huawei to maintain operations without major sacrifices, but the company may move to reduce US dependency.
