Huawei’s 5G initiative hits roadblock

5G tends to get associated with Huawei, but as the company continues to reduce the effects of the US ban, Nokia is ready to sign a 5G contract in Malaysia. Nokia has already done a deal with U Mobile Malaysia to expand its mobile data business within the country.

The three year agreement will see U Mobile deploying a Nokia Single RAN network in Malaysia along with a microwave and IP-based mobile transport technologies. U Mobile can end its reliance on radio access network sharing protocols with this arrangement. The companies will also be conducting 5G network tries within the year to showcase eMBB capabilities and 5G use cases like VR streaming and esports.

U Mobile Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen talks about the company expanding its network nationwide for better customer experience and about the opportunity to take advantage of Nokia’s expertise for its 5G journey strategy. He mentions plans on 5G live network trials with a Nokia 5G-ready AirScale ready for tests.

Companies have withdrawn association from Huawei due to the US ban, with companies like AMD, ARM, Google, Intel, Qualcomm and such just some of them, indirectly affecting Huawei’s 5G progress.
