Thanks to our sources, we recently learned of the most downloaded and heavily used applications on the BlackBerry 10 platform, signalling what most BlackBerry users in the Asia Pacific region want the most out of their BBs- and what they want most around here, seems to be social connectivity and productivity apps.

Social connectivity does not just mean social media applications such as Twitter and Facebook for Blackberry 10, which is hands down the most in-demand application across the region, be it Malaysia, Singapore, or Australia- where it occupies either the number 1 or 2 slot in every market. But not just those: messaging and networking apps like WeChat, WhatsApp, Skype, and LinkedIn were all also among the top 10 of most popular downloads.

The second most popular, however, was BlackBerry maps that even outshone BB’s vaunted (and until recently, exclusive) BBM service which are now not only NOT limited to the former RIM’s fully capacitive devices like the BlackBerry Z30 and QWERTY-keypad phones including the BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Q5.

The other pillar of the BlackBerry World store was the wide selection of productivity applications, including Adobe Reader, Box, Documents to Go, and popular choice Connect to Dropbox. Other types of best-selling productivity apps were the likes of Money Plus and Stocks for BlackBerry 10, which fits with the perception of current day BB buyers- savvy business man who are using their smartphones as networking and organisational tools to maximise their efficiency.

Aside from these generally popular choices, what did users in Malaysia specifically download? Angry Birds Star Wars, of course. Next to the interstellar bird-flinging fun, chatting services also proved to be a crowd-puller, with social messaging and conferencing apps like FaceFlow Video Chat gaining momentum as one of the top paid apps in World.

Looking at our neighbours in the regions gave an indication of what each country’s BB users fancied compared to the others; for example, in Hong Kong fitness and food apps made an impression in comparison with the rest of the Pacific rim nations, with Runtastic Pro for BlackBerry 10 and OpenRice being the most downloaded fitness and eatery guide apps respectively.

On the other hand, in Taiwan travel took precedence over food with BlackBerry Travel and BeWeather 10 Pro; while in Vietnam users downloaded handy tool apps such as Flashlight Free; in Thailand, the paid app StarTracker was a surprise hit for astronomy afficianados; Philippines instead opted for the more light-hearted world domination type of fun with Minion Rush as their ‘local’ favorite.

Interesting to see the varied types of apps people in different countries can be interested in, albeit with quite a lot of common tastes as well. With 2013 turning out to be such an interesting year for the tumultuous BlackBerry, it remains to be seen what 2014 will have to offer for the not only BlackBerry the company and its devices, but also its BlackBerry 10 operating platform.
