Mobile Word Congress (MWC) 2014 is the second big tech showcase event of the year after CES back in January. The city of Barcelona, Spain is set to host this year’s edition again, it’s ninth straight turn of playing host. The congress, said to be largest mobile congress in the world, is scheduled to be held from 24th-27 February.

All the big names in the mobile phone industry will descent to the Spanish city for one massive gadgets party where they will attempt to wow the world with their latest, and greatest products

Here are what you can expect from the Big 5.

1.       Samsung

The largest Korean electronics firm will fire the first salvo and attempt to overshadow the whole event by unveiling the biggest thing the congress has to offer – the Samsung Galaxy S5. It is safe to say that the world will sit up and take notice of this one. The pressure is on for them to win back detractors and redeem themselves after the disappointment that was the S4. Redeeming oneself is also the theme for their next rumored product announcement, the Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch. Said to feature a completely revamped design, the second incarnation was also recently reported to run on the company’s own Tizen OS. If you are only able to follow one event during the whole congress, make it this one.

2.       Nokia

The once-dominant Nokia will no doubt commands a large attention too seeing this is the event that will go down into the history books as the moment the Finnish company will announce their first-ever stride into the Android world with the Nokia X. Short-lived effort or the beginning of great things to come, remains to be seen. However, the Nokia X is not expected to hog the limelight all to itself as Nokia is set to introduce new entries to their Lumia line – the phablet Lumia 1820 and tablet Lumia 2020.

3.       Sony

MWC is a “Sirius” business to the Japanese company too as they look set to debut more than one successor to their past flagships. First up, the follow-up to last year’s successful Xperia Z1 – the Xperia Z2, codenamed D6503 a.k.a Sirius. Then, there were talks that Sony’s resident tablet, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z (still remember that?) will also get an update, to be called the Xperia Tablet Z2. No surprise there. All the high-end and expensive gadgets aside, Sony apparently will also have something in store for the mid-end market in the form of Xperia G, a 4.8-inch smartphone.

4.       HTC

Initially, many thought and hoped that the Taiwanese phone maker will showcase the sequel to their hit flagship HTC One during the congress. Alas, things look very unlikely now that press invites have been sent out to urge the media to save the date on March 25th, all but confirming the HTC “All New One” will get its own show instead of jostling with the other candidates vying for attention. Smart move there. But they still will make its (small) presence felt with the announcement of a new addition to their Desire range – the 5.5-inch dual-SIM Desire 8.

5.       LG

Not to be left out of the party, LG has confirmed they will parade a few new smartphones there. Top on the list is the LG G Pro 2, the follow-up to 2013’s Optimus G Pro. Besides that, LG has also promised that the newly-announced L Series III, comprising the low-end L90, L70 and L40 will also make an appearance at the show. Apart from these, could there be any other surprises up LG’s sleeve? Oh Yes! The LG G2 mini and perhaps their own take of a smartwatch. Pssst…did someone say LG G3 too?

So that’s a quick look of what we can expect during the 3-day event. And we haven’t even talk about other participants too such as, BlackBerry, Huawei and ZTE. This year’s MWC promises to be an explosive affair.

Which company’s showing are you looking forward to the most?
