Smartphone cameras have gotten so good these days that they have mostly replaced dedicated cameras as everyone’s favorite go-to camera. After all, “the best camera is the one that’s with you” and no device sticks ever so close to you 24/7 than your smartphone. When it comes to that, the iPhone has a reputation over the years as having one of the best cameras on a smartphone. In recent years though, other smartphone manufacturers have caught up.

Surely the company who had made the greatest stride in mobile photography in the last year or so is none other than Huawei. The introduction of the Huawei P9 with Leica technologies in 2016 shook the mobile photography game dominated by Apple as well as Samsung for the most part. It is also easy to forget that the P9 is the device that kick-started the whole dual-camera trend permeating across the smartphone industry right now.

Now in 2017, the Huawei P10 further improves on the photo-taking capabilities of the P9 and it is definitely one of the best camera phones in recent times. But how will it stack up against the might of iPhone? We find out by taking the P10 and iPhone 7 out for a spin.

But before we get to the shots comparison, let’s first take a look at the camera features and modes of both phones.

The P10 packs tons of features in its camera arsenal but the ones that really matter are its new Potrait Mode, Wide-Aperture (for taking “bokeh shot”) and of course, the Monochrome mode which takes true black-and-white shots. It also has a Pro mode which lets you manually tweak settings like the manual focus, ISO, white balance, shutter speed settings and other parameters.

The iPhone 7 on the other hand is a little bare-bone in comparison as you only get the main photo mode with the option to turn HDR on and off, along with the by-now standard features such as time-lapse, slow-mo and panorama, which by the way can also found in the P10.

Now let’s see how the P10 stakes up against the iPhone 7 in a variety of environments. Do note that all the shots were taken in “neutral” settings with no additional modes activated on both devices (except a select few which we will get into later on) and without any post-edits and modifications.

We can clearly see that the P10 produces shots with more vivid colors, which make for more eye-pleasing viewing, though they have a much darker tone overall.

Again, shots taken by the P10 has a higher contrast with deeper colors.

For low-light environment, we’ll say the iPhone 7 did a better job as the shots have lesser noise while the details of the objects in the frame look more refined. Some of the objects which can be seen in the iPhone 7 shots are not visible in the P10’s shots (especially in the first comparison shots)

This is where the P10 has the clear edge. As can be seen several shots, the bokeh effect (wide-aperture mode) made possible by its dual camera makes close-up shots generally more interesting as the primary subject in foreground is given more prominence (in other words, they pop out more). It adds extra “oomph” to what are otherwise ordinary-looking pictures. Of course, that makes for more Instagram-worthy shots too! Also, notice the small little details that are more refined in the P10 shots.

Conclusion

All in all, the Huawei P10 is more than able to measure up against the mighty iPhone 7. It performs up to expectation in almost all environments (bar low-light conditions) and it even excels the iPhone in close-up shots based on what we can see here. Oh and we haven’t even delve into what more can the P10 do with its Pro mode and Monochrome mode.
