[Comparison] Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 vs Galaxy Tab A

If you are shopping for a new Samsung tablet, now is a good time as Samsung’s new tablet offerings for this year are starting to invade our market. The Galaxy Tab A has just hit retail stores here a few days ago and rumors are currently rife about the Galaxy Tab S2, which is the follow-up to Samsung’s 2014 flagship tablet.

So which of those two you should get? We take a quick comparison look between them. (Since the Galaxy Tab S2 is not official yet, we will be using its rumored specs for this purpose).

The Galaxy Tab A measures at 7.4mm thin and tips the scale at 313g and 450g for the Galaxy Tab A 8 and Galaxy Tab A 9.7 respectively.

Not much is known about the Galaxy Tab S2’s dimensions but reports claim it to be thinner than Apple’s 6.1mm-thin iPad Air 2.

The Galaxy Tab A comes in two sizes – 8-inch and 9.7-inch. Rather disappointingly, they are not your usual Samsung device with punchy Super AMOLED display but instead pack only 1024 x 768-resolution TFT screen, which may be a huge turnoff for many.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S2 is rumored to come in the 8-inch and 9.7-inch screen sizes too and like their predecessors, it is quite safe to say that they will have Super AMOLED displays, at the very least.

The internals of the Galaxy Tab A spells 2GB RAM , quad-core 1.2GHz processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset. It is available in either 16GB/32GB variants that can be expanded as much as up to 128GB with the included microSD slot.

The Galaxy Tab S2 will pack more powerful specs (naturally) and it is said to have 3GB RAM and 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor on board while the base model will have at least 32GB internal storage memory.

Both the Galaxy Tab A and Galaxy Tab S2 run on Android Lollipop and while the former has Android 5.0 Lollipop, the latter is expected to ship with a newer version (Android 5.1.1 Lollipop?)

Do not expect the tablets to be equipped with the same top-notch camera as their smartphone counterparts though. The Galaxy Tab A sports a 5MP rear camera coupled with a 2MP front-facer that should be enough for the casual snaps.

The Galaxy Tab S2 fairs a little bit better in that it has a 8MP main camera accompanied by a 2.1MP front camera.

Price & Availability

Available in stores now, the Galaxy Tab A retails at RM1,299 for the 8-inch model and RM1,599 for the 9.7-inch model (inclusive of GST). On the other hand, we can expect to see the Galaxy Tab S2 getting announced sometime in June.
